VIA AFRICA... IRIXOA TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

IRIXOA, autonomous community of Galicia. From this small town we started the road on the Africa Way. An interesting alternative is to visit BETANZOS the day before if you feel like it, visit this beautiful town 14 km from Irixoa with the reputation of having the best potato omelet and other delicacies such as zorza, octopus, cod and other wonders, the two temples of the Tortilla in Betanzos are Casa Miranda and Mesón O’Pote, (for giving you some clues …) Betanzos leaves us with a genuine medieval flavor, a place of reference in the English Way, provides the pilgrim with any required service and an enriching visit.
If you wish and without any additional cost, the first day, we will welcome you at the Irixoa sports center. You can leave your backpacks, take a shower and spend the night. At 22: 30h. We will make the presentations of the team that forms the African Way, a summary of the project and the activities that will take place during the five days.

STAGE IRIXOA – THE CASTELLANA

We leave early in the morning after breakfast.We will walk along footpaths and forests about 10 kilometers until reaching Ponte Aranga where the views are extraordinary, we will rest to resume the road with strength. After traveling for about 6 kilometers we will arrive at our first destination, A CASTELLANA. Accommodation: Sport centre A Castellana Stage difficulty: Medium-low. Distance traveled: 15,5 Kms

STAGE A CASTELLANA – CURTIS

We left early in the morning to continue after a good breakfast. In this way we will enjoy magical, wild and protected spaces, highlighting a relatively wide area of ​​natural forests, linked to river corridors that house much of the relevant biodiversity of the Reserve. We will visit the Rector’s House of Our Lady of Lourdes, home of Maria Antonia Dans, Church of Santa Maria de Fisteus and San Roque de Xabriño. A few kilometers we will pass by Montesalgueiro and we will continue until Curtis, that is located in the eastern limit of the province of A Coruña. STAGE CURTIS – PONTE CARREIRA

We started the 3rd. Day out of Curtis and continue walking along a small stretch of Coto de Vista Alegre, passing near a beautiful rural tourism house, a picturesque small and hospitable village. We continue making way for different tracks, areas of mills and an open pit, until reaching Xanceda, resuming road until Ponte Carreira, Corunna municipality of Frades. STAGE PONTE CARREIRA – SIGÜERO

The municipality was route of passage between Sobrado de los Monjes and Compostela, existing an inn in the place of Castiñeiro Redondo (Moar), in the part of the municipality Oroso. We will enjoy unrivaled views of the Samo and Tambre rivers. The first part of the way leads to Cachopal, a small village. We will continue to A Torre, by forest tracks, passing next to the church of Santa Eulalia and continue to Cardama, from there we will return enjoying beautiful views of the river Tambre, which we will cross several times until arriving at the church of San Miguel de Gándara. The last section we will do for a river path that ends in the shelter of Sigüeiro with an excellent river beach where we can refresh and give us a bath. Sigüeiro is located on the banks of the Tambre, bordering Santiago de Compostela. It is precisely that natural border where the most emblematic element of the place sits: the medieval bridge, dating from the 13th century. SIGÜERO STAGE – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Sigüeiro- Santiago de Compostela: it is the final stage, it separates us a distance of only 16 kilometers. An exciting awakening, the feeling that has brought us here, is about to be achieved. We leave Sigüeiro by the Royal Street crossing the bridge over the river Tambre, and following a series of forest tracks parallel to the river to A Barciela, we will continue the journey to visit the church of San Cristobo de Enfensa. Then follow the same trail through the villages of A Igrexa, Aldea de Arriba, Reboredo and O Castro. We continue our way until Amio, we pass by Mallou and soon we will reach the outskirts of Santiago, passing by the Parish San Caetano. We will pass through Plaza de la Inmaculada to reach the end of our adventure, Santiago de Compostela. Stage difficulty: low. Distance traveled: 15 Km.   -The approximate time of arrival of the five continents to the Praza or Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela, will be about 13.00. Reencounter of all the groups that have walked along the Roads of America, Africa, Oceania-Australia and Asia. The entrance is made through five different places in the Plaza, symbolically forming the five-petalled rose in the center of the Plaza. -Visit to the Cathedral. -Programmed food for all walkers. This meal will be based on typical products of the place.
